No matter what medium you advertise your product in (email, postcard, coupon, flyer, web-ad, etc.) you’ll need to use these four simple steps to make your offer an amazing success. Professional marketers use dozens of variables to determine how to target the right offer to the right customer at the right time.

1. Use a Targeted List
This is the most critical part of your offer.
You wouldn’t want to try selling sheet music to people who don’t even play a musical instrument. You need to focus your list on your niche customer. By using market segmentation (demographics & psychographics), you can really narrow your focus and get to the exact customer that is most receptive to your offer. The more narrow you can define your list, the more amazingly successful your offer will be.

2. Test Different Offers
Unless you’ve used the same offer in the past, this can be the most difficult component to predict which will get the best results. Try different discounts, different “freebies”, different samples … and definitely different prices. There are countless examples of products that couldn’t be sold at $3, but sold-out at $15 … the exact same product but presented in a different offer or to a better defined niche customer.

3. Design your offer for your Targeted List
This is where you give your offer it’s personality. Do you want it to be intelligent, smirky, humourous, funny, serious, flashy, simple? This also includes details like the layout, the color scheme, placement of headlines and size of text. Sometimes you’ll find that simply changeing a few words or the general layout of your offer can produce drastic increases in your response rate.

4. Evaluate the Results, Refine your offer, and Repeat
The final component involves tracking, testing, tweaking and re-testing all of the previous components. This is the surest way to take a good offer and elevate it into an amazing offer. You need to use a system of codes and tracking to evaluate your response rates and determine the best components for the most successful offer. A key aspect of this final component is having a clearly defined result for your offer before you begin. Did you achieve that result? Keep tweaking and testing the components until you achieve your desired results. Then set your goals higher and start the process over again.
