WordPress Blog Design: Domains

article clipper remember WordPress Blog Design: Domains

Think of your domain name as the written version of your logo or your tagline personified.
Your best choice would be www.yourbusinessname.com.

If your business name isn’t available, then choose something that’s just as easily associated with and descriptive of your business.

Research shows that the majority of people use what’s called “direct navigation” when they go online.
That means that they type in a business name or web address directly into their browser’s address bar without going to a search engine first. Then if they don’t find what they are looking for, they use a search engine (like Google or Yahoo).

This is the reason why a short, specific and descriptive domain name is so important for your website.
You want it be logical and easily remembered so people can find it with minimum effort.

Say your business name is Joe’s Coffee.
Well, www.joescoffee.com would be your best domain name choice, but that might be taken already.
This is where you have to get creative, but also keep it short and simple (KISS).

When selecting alternative domain names, it’s a good idea for you to add at least one descriptive “keyword” pertaining to your business and/or it’s location. Be careful with location based domain names though, just in case you want to grow and expand in the future.

The reason for adding a keyword in your domain name is that when people use that keyword in search engines your site will come up more frequently … if it’s a logically associated keyword.
And that means more traffic, which means more sales. We like more sales!

So continuing on with Joe’s Coffee scenario, you might try: JoesCoffeeBar.com, JoesCoffeeCafe.com, JoesCoffeeShop.com, JoesCoffeeStore.com, JoesCoffeeBiz.com, JoesCoffeeCup.com, JoesCoffeeBrew.com, JoesCoffeeCorner.com, JoesCoffeeDelight.com, JoesCoffeePerks.com, JoesCoffeePlace.com, JoesCoffeeSeattle.com, etc.

If all those just happened to be taken, you could get a little more creative and know that you’d have to market the name harder, but you could still have something descriptive: AllJoesCoffee.com, BuyJoesCoffee.com, DrinkJoesCoffee.com, MoJoesCoffee.com, SipJoesCoffee.com, etc.

You’re only limited by your imagination … well, and logic … don’t pick anything too unrelated.
JoesGrounds.com probably wouldn’t fit too well even though it might seem logical to you.
Always look at your domain name from your customer’s point of view and choose accordingly.

After choosing your domain name, the next step is purchasing it with a registrar.
You pay a yearly fee to have your domain registered with a registrar, but you can get discounts if you purchase multiple years in advance (3 to 5 is good).

A good company to go with for domain name purchasing is GoDaddy.
They’ve been around for a while and they have top notch customer service.
Plus, their prices are affordable and they have detailed tutorials that will teach you exactly how to use their products and services.
