As a small business owner, you often don’t have the funds to hire a professional graphic designer to work on every project and so you end up hobbling together something on your own.

Since I know I can’t hammer home enough the fact that professional designers are worth their weight in gold, and you’ll just go ahead and attempt designing materials yourself anyway, I can at least share some tips to get you moving in the right direction … and hope with a little luck that your home-made design project won’t wind up being a complete disaster.

1. Create a Focal Point
Use a single dominant feature to capture the reader’s attention and draws them into the design. Make sure the main graphic(s) compliments the headline and doesn’t fight against it. Emphasizing too many parts of a design makes the viewer lost and confused and not know where to focus their attention.
